EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw says an inmate at the Calgary Remand Centre has tested positive more COVID-19.

“We learned this morning (Friday) of an inmate at the Calgary Remand Centre who was tested positive for COVID-19.”

“This isn’t someone newly admitted who was exposed before they arrived.”

Hinshaw says it is the first case at a correctional facility in Alberta.

“The individual was admitted directly to the quarantine unit upon arrival, he did not report any symptoms on arrival and was quarantined with one cellmate who was admitted at the same time and who also had no symptoms,” Hinshaw said.

She says the inmate reported feeling unwell the following evening, and then he and his cellmate were both placed in isolation.

“All inmates are assessed for exposure and symptoms upon admission to the facility or a transfer from another location. As well as at a minimum, once per day while at the centre.”

She says both inmates are currently in isolation and the centre has taken proper precautions.

Hinshaw adds correctional facilities across the province quarantine new arrivals for 14 days.

Following the new case, in the last 24 hours, 81 additional cases have popped up in Alberta.

80 people are in hospital, 17 of those are in the ICU.

4,020 people have recovered from the virus.

“I am sad to report, one additional death has occurred. A woman in her 80’s in a continuing care facility in the Calgary zone,” Hinshaw added. “This brings the total number of deaths in Alberta to 115.”

“As of today (Friday) there are 678 cases in outbreaks in continuing care facilities across the province.”

Taking a second to speak about the cases at some of Alberta’s meat processing plants, Hinshaw said there are 95 active cases in workers, and 849 workers have recovered at the Cargill Meat processing plant.

At JBS Foods in Brooks, there are 96 active cases and 497 workers have recovered. Harmony Beef has 21 cases while 16 people have recovered.
