CALGARY (660 NEWS) — It was a different way to enjoy the outdoors as hikers, campers and outdoors people set up inside their homes this weekend and took to social media to stand up against cuts to Alberta Parks.
The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society voiced their displeasure to Environment Minister Jason Nixon.
The cuts by the minister, include the removal of 164 park sites, the closure of 20 of the sites, the decommissioning of popular cross country ski trails and the increase of all types of user fees — were met with significant opposition from both conservation organizations and recreation groups.
It’s been awesome to see so many great #StayHome rally pictures and stories today! It has been powerful to watch Albertans come together (while staying apart) to #DefendABParks #ableg #abpoli #abparks pic.twitter.com/9AnPLdZUwu

With the pandemic, the protest was a way for members to protest in a safe and fun way to make sure these sites are not closed or removed permanently.
Participants also called their MLAs and Nixon to voice their opposition to the changes.
Members shared their pictures of their home rally on social media under #defendabparks.
