AHS consolidating maternity wards in Calgary area

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – You may need to travel if you’re expecting a baby in the Calgary region.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has announced it’s consolidating all maternity services in the Calgary Zone.

Starting next Tuesday, all services delivered at the High River Hospital and the South Health Campus, Women’s Health Program will be moved to the Foothills, Peter Lougheed and Rockyview hospitals.

“Families will continue to receive the full services of physicians, midwives and staff as they follow through with their birth plans throughout the pandemic response,” said AHS in a statement.

“Hospitals remain a safe place for mothers and their baby and it is important expectant mothers follow their caregiver’s plan during the pandemic.”

The women’s health, outpatient clinics at the two affected sites will remain open.

AHS said the move is being made to maximize its resources, in anticipation of a surge of COVID-19 cases with patients requiring a high level of care.
