No decision on if Stampede will proceed this summer

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Mayor Maheed Nenshi says he expects a decision will be made within a week about whether the Calgary Stampede will go ahead this summer, despite fears over COVID-19.

All city events and permits have been cancelled up until June 30th, but the Stampede falls after that.

Nenshi, who is a board member with the Stampede, says pulblic safety is the organization’s top priority.

“I know that two seperate tasks are going on which is, ‘We are evaluating whether or not we need to extend that ban past June 30th’ and ‘the Calgary Stampede is evaluating their ability to move forward.’ I anticipate we’ll have answers on both of those in the next week or so,” he said.

The World Professional Chuckwagon Association has cancelled its first four races of the year.
