Former Flames goalie Eddie Lack announces retirement

VANCOUVER – Goalie Eddie Lack, who began his NHL career with the Vancouver Canucks, has announced his retirement.

Lack, 32, revealed on Twitter that hip injuries are preventing him from continuing to play, but that he has no regrets about the decision.

“My hip issues have come to the point where I can live a normal life, which I’m extremely grateful for, but unfortunately it’s not good enough to play professional hockey,” Lack said in a video. “I’m content with the decision as I know I’ve done everything in my power to come back but it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Lack broke into the NHL in the 2013-14 season, serving as backup to Roberto Luongo and later Ryan Miller with the Canucks. He played two seasons in Vancouver, two with the Carolina Hurricanes and made brief stops with the Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils.

Over the course of his NHL career, Lack appeared in 144 games, 123 of them starts, posting a 56-55-18 record, 2.62 goals-against average, .909 save percentage and nine shutouts.

Last August, Lack announced his hip injuries would keep him out of the pro game this season, but he did serve as a volunteer coach with the Arizona State Sun Devil Division 1 hockey team.
