Calgary airport to layoff one-third of staff

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The Calgary airport is the latest business to announce layoffs due to the impact of COVID-19.

The airport announced Thursday, it is laying off about one-third of its crew due to the financial challenges brought on by the pandemic.

In an emailed statement, the Calgary Airport Authority says “Saying goodbye to colleagues and friends is very difficult, but with passenger volumes decreasing dramatically our airport has been forced to say farewell to talented, valued and committed Crew members, many on a temporary basis.”

“These kinds of decisions are very difficult and we hope that as the crisis eases, and air travel resumes, we may be able to welcome many of these Crew members back.”

The airport says they had roughly 300 people on staff before the decision came down.

The job losses follow thousands of others that have been announced by major airline companies including WestJet, Air Canada and Sunwing.
