‘There are no words’: Family of murdered business owner speaks out

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The family of a Calgary man killed near his business over the weekend say they are heartbroken.

Calgary police have identified the man as Christophe Herblin.

Herblin responded to a break-and-enter alarm at his business around 3 a.m. on Mar. 14 and called police.

Once police cleared the area, Herblin stayed in the parking when three people returned and approached him.

It’s alleged the suspects were trying to enter a cannabis shop through Herblin’s business on Bow Trail near 37 St SW.

Herblin was injured in the altercation with the suspects and made his way to a nearby business where emergency crews were called but he later died of his injuries.

“This is an extremely tragic and senseless murder in our community,” said Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta with the police Homicide Unit. “We have an innocent person whose life was taken.”

Shiavetta said the cannabis store near Herblin’s cafe has been the subject of at least two break-ins recently. He adds police have responded to around 20 break-ins at cannabis shops in the past year.

Herblin’s family have shared a brief statement and a photo of Christophe in hopes that people who have information about the murder will come forward.

“There are no words that I can say that will be adequate to describe Christophe. He was a kind, generous, and gentle man. He loved his family, cooking, animals, motorcycles, good friends and wonderful food and wine. He worked extremely hard to realize his dream of opening his own cafe. That dream was cut short by this senseless tragedy. He was much loved and will be missed always. Our hearts are broken.”

Police have not found the suspects and are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
