CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Various sports leagues around the world are suspending operations due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NHL is joining the list of other sports leagues that are cancelled.

The NHL has suspended the regular season and it is unclear when or if the 2019-2020 campaign will resume, although the NHL hopes that the Stanley Cup can still be awarded.

The league said that even though no players have tested positive, it could not risk any spread of infection and made the decision after consulting medical experts and team owners

The Calgary Flames have put Thursday’s and Saturday’s home games on hold, but there is no word on the status of future games. A statement by the team adds they do support the decision.

Minor hockey leagues such as the CHL and AHL are also suspending play until further notice.
