City of Calgary activates Municipal Emergency Plan

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Due to the continued spread of COVID-19 in Calgary, the City announced Thursday afternoon it has activated its Municipal Emergency Management Plan.

This move mostly ensures that departments can work more closely together and allows for the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) to use additional resources to make quick decisions.

“It’s easy to get very very nervous, and it’s easy and correct to be looking for answers,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said. “If you’re here in Calgary, you are in the best place in the world to deal with a pandemic.”

City Manager David Duckworth said a travel ban is being put in place on City staff to prevent them from going outside the country, while any inter-Canadian travel will be subject to approval.

City employees are also being given the option of working from home during the outbreak.

“Our top priority as the City of Calgary is, of course, the health, safety, and well being of, not only our employees but also all of the public,” Duckworth said.

The head of CEMA, Tom Sampson, said they are stocking up on hand sanitizers and disinfectant wipes to make sure not to run out.

A committee is also continuing to examine the future of city-hosted events after the province advised the cancellation of events involving more than 250 people.
