City of Calgary looking for feedback on changes to Pet Ownership Bylaw

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The City of Calgary is conducting a review of its Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw and are looking for Calgarians to weigh in.

Since the rules were last updated 12 years ago, times have changed, with emotional support animals and livestock being considered in the latest review.

There will be six areas of focus for the engagement, including:

  • Wildlife in Calgary
  • Feral, Stray, and Roaming Cats
  • Urban Agriculture
  • Vicious Dogs
  • Licensing
  • Administration

Following the first phase of public engagement, the City will then seek input on potential amendments in phase 2 Engagement before presenting to the SPC on Community & Protective Services and City Council between January and March 2021.

The engagement will look to get an idea of who is taking the survey to determine what kind of pet-owner, or non-pet-owner you are.

When it comes to Wildlife in Calgary, the survey wants to know what you would consider nuisance wildlife in Calgary, and what you would suggest to make it easier to co-exist with these animals.

Do you have an issue with cats roaming through your neighbourhood and how would you like city crews to deal with strays?

As of right now, livestock is not allowed unless the owner has a Livestock as Emotional Animal Permit, but some would like to have the option to keep livestock to enhance their local food system or to raise livestock as a pastime.

These are just some of the things the City is looking for feedback on.

If you want to have your voice heard, you can provide your input on the city’s website until March 18.
