Magliocca repays alcohol expenses since 2017 as council meets

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The councillor at the centre of an expense scandal is expected back at City Hall.

A source tells 660 NEWS that Ward 2 Councillor Joe Magliocca will be at the City Council meeting Monday.

Earlier Monday, Magliocca released a statement on his Facebook page addressing the recent issues surrounding his expenses.

In the statement, he said he’s reviewed his past expenses since 2017 and has voluntarily repaid all alcohol-related spending for that period.

He has also posted his receipts from 2017 and 2018 and intends to post 2019 shortly.

“Calgarians expect their City Council to be fully transparent with their expenses,” the statement reads. “I am committed to ensuring my mistake will become a positive step forward in restoring public confidence in Council’s expense policies.”

Magliocca was absent from a special meeting of council last week as he was out of the country for the Family Day long weekend and couldn’t make it back in time.

During that meeting, the mayor and city councillors met with the city solicitor, city auditor, integrity commissioner, and the ethics advisor to look into Magliocca’s recent expenses.

The Ward 2 councillor is under fire for expensing over $6,000 in food and alcohol at a conference in Quebec City last year.

Magliocca has apologized for the spending and said he will repay around $2,100 of the bill.

Two notices of motion will be brought forward at the meeting including one to look at all councillor expenses.

Councillors Jeromy Farkas and Sean Chu will present that motion saying public trust needs to be repaired.
