Two seaplanes damaged after suspect reportedly tries to steal one, crashes into another in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The search is on for someone who reportedly stole a seaplane and crashed it in Vancouver’s harbour Friday at around 3:30 a.m.

“Witnesses say this plane then crashed into another plane, they saw the suspect flee on foot,” Cst. Tania Visintin with Vancouver Police explained, adding police searched for the suspect but couldn’t find them.

Police would not say who owned the aircraft, but images of a Harbour Air plane show damage to a wing. No one appears to have been hurt, the VPD added.

“As with any crime in the City of Vancouver, police officers respond accordingly and we investigate thoroughly,” Visintin explained.

In a statement to NEWS 1130, Harbour Air confirmed it was made aware of an attempted theft early Friday morning, and that two of its planes were damaged.

“We are currently working with the police to provide any support required during this investigation,” the company said. “The safety and security of passengers is our priority.”

It’s unclear how the person managed to get into the aircraft, let alone take off in in.

Meanwhile, the incident impacted some travel Friday morning, with a number of passengers who were set to take off from the Coal Harbour terminal being diverted to Vancouver International Airport.

As of 8:00 a.m., Harbour Air said all flights were operating normally.

No arrests have been made.
