CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A second-degree murder trial against a father charged in the death of his four-year-old daughter continues in a Calgary courtroom.

Rebekah Oluwafemi died in 2014 after suffering injuries at a southeast Calgary home, with prosecutors saying it was the result of abuse, while the defence says it was caused by accidental injuries.

Today, the courtroom was emotional at times, with the accused, Oluwatosin Oluwafemi, holding his head in his hands and wiping away tears.

A pair of police-intercepted phone calls from a month after Rebekah died was played, with Oluwafemi saying it has been “real hell” for him.

He had also said Rebekah may have been injured after tripping on the stairs.

During the trial, a family friend and Rebekah’s mother described her as a fun kid who loved playing and was very social.

The friend also said that Oluwafemi was a caring father, and was an emotional wreck after her death.

She was at the home on the day of Rebekah’s death and performed CPR after she arrived and saw Rebekah unconscious.

Rebekah’s mother testified that they would sometimes harshly discipline Rebekah at times, and had noticed a lot of bruises on her body days before her death but could not say where they came from.

The mother will continue her testimony tomorrow morning.
