‘It’s astronomical’: Nearly $10 million in drugs seized near Drumheller

Calgary Police stopped 10 million dollars worth of cocaine and meth from hitting the streets. Tara Overholt reports on how they tracked down the drugs.

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Police hauled in close to $10 million worth of drugs after a bust near Drumheller last week.

Last November, Calgary police were tipped off about a local man who may be involved in transporting drugs across the country and worked with counterparts in Edmonton and Winnipeg in the investigation.

Police, with help of Drumheller RCMP, eventually arrested the suspect on Jan. 30 near a hamlet east of Drumheller.

Inside his truck, officers found almost 50 kg of cocaine and just over 47 kg of crystal meth.

“It’s astronomical,” said S/Sgt. Kyle Grant with the Strategic Enforcement Unit. “There will definitely be a ripple effect and it will be felt within Alberta that this has been taken off the street.”

“We have no idea how many overdoses we could prevent, other crimes associated to dealing drugs.”

Police estimate the wholesale value of the drugs is around $5 million, while the street value is around $9.4 million.

“All of this stuff has yet to be processed, packaged or divvied out into saleable amounts and that’s why the price skyrockets,” said Grant.

The drugs came out of Ontario and were bound for Alberta, but who ordered them remains unclear as police continue to investigate any other links to organized crime.

“Drugs fuel violent crime and investigations such as this address both the drugs and the associated violence,” said Grant.

“We are committed to working with our policing partners to address enforcement and with our community partners to support prevention and intervention initiatives for vulnerable Calgarians.”

Jacob Neumann, 33, has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking drugs and is due in court on Friday.

Grant said the accused does not have an extensive criminal record, but it is believed he has been involved with trafficking high amounts of drugs for at least the last year.

Grant added that this is one of the biggest busts ever conducted by an independent Calgary police unit in the last twenty years.
