Alberta company that fights traffic tickets closes up shop

CALGARY – An Alberta-based company that fought traffic tickets in court has closed its doors.

Rooco Ltd., which launched in 2018, would let offenders sell them tickets with a set fine for 10 to 15 per cent less than the total fine on the ticket.

They made money by sending an agent to try and get the ticket reduced, paying it, and keep the difference as profit.

But in a statement released Tuesday, the company’s founder and CEO Andrew Ashton said changes made by Alberta courts meant that they couldn’t operate anymore. He said traffic courts are refusing to allow Rooco to appear as an agent for individuals.

“I believe we have done everything we could to resolve this situation and regret that we are unable to continue to provide support to our over 5,000 satisfied customers in Alberta,” continued the statement.

The company has started sending termination notices to customers with imminent court dates and expects all notices to be sent out in the coming days.
