Relief in sight for Alberta as the Atlantic gets blasted with a winter storm

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Friday marks the fifth day of an extreme cold warning, but the cold spell could soon break.

While windchills will stay in the minus 30s Friday, Environment Canada is calling for positive temperatures by next week.

Monday’s high is forecasted at five degrees with the plus temperatures staying throughout the week.

Until then, the risk of frostbite and hypothermia still exists for Friday and Saturday and you’re encouraged to keep bundling up.

Meanwhile, the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) said you need to consider your vehicle in the freezing temperatures.

“When you start getting into these colder temperatures that we’re experiencing, yes, you do need to let these vehicles warm-up for a longer period of time,” said Randy Loyk with AMA. “That’s so you can get the oil flowing properly.”

Loyk recommends you install a block heater if you don’t have one and use synthetic oil to keep the car running well all winter.

While Alberta will see an end to its extreme weather, Atlantic Canada is bracing for a winter storm.

Environment Canada has a blizzard and storm surge warning in effect for parts of the Maritimes which could bring at least 50 centimetres of snow.

The Mayor of St. John’s has declared a state of emergency, ordering all businesses to close and non-emergency vehicles to stay off the roads.
