AESO wants you to conserve energy during extreme cold

Alberta’s extreme cold sparks energy issues. Nervous homeowners watching their pipes while energy companies see dollar signs. As extreme cold consumes Alberta, Jon Muma looks at just how close a spike in energy demand came to causing potentially devastating power outages.

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Alberta’s Energy Systems Operator (AESO) wants you to conserve power during the latest cold spell.

On its Twitter page Wednesday morning, the operator said energy consumption will likely climb as temperatures drop and more houses are turning up the heat.

AESO is recommending you try to conserve energy on Wednesday between peak hours of 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The operator offers several tips including turning off unnecessary lights and appliances, using cold water for washing clothes and limiting the use of kitchen or bathroom ventilation fans.

Earlier this week, AESO issued an Alert 2, saying it needed to dip into reserves to power homes in Alberta.
