CALGARY (660 NEWS) — One of the country’s most recognizable tennis players is set to play in next month’s Calgary National Bank Challenger.

Vasek Pospisil is coming off a strong comeback in the fall of 2019, particularly his impressive performance at the Davis Cup, helping Canada advance to its first-ever final.

“It took some efforts to get him,” tournament director Danny Da Costa told 660 NEWS. “Daniel Nestor assists me in the event. He’s a good friend of mine. We started to discuss getting Vasek to play, during the Davis Cup in Madrid, actually. We convinced him it would be a good event for him to play as he was coming back, building his ranking. The conditions in Calgary with the high altitude and fast courts are well-suited for his game.

“He’s a very dynamic player: big game, big serve, great volleys. He’s one of the best doubles players in the world. He’s got several top 10 singles wins as well.”

“I’m extremely excited to play in the Calgary National Bank Challenger at the Alberta Tennis Centre in February,” Pospisil said in a statement. “I’ve heard that the organizers run an incredible event and that the crowds and tennis community in Alberta are amazing. I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

If you’re just a casual tennis fan and don’t know, ATP Challenger Tour events offer players a chance to earn points toward their world ranking.

Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic won the first edition of the tournament in 2018 — the largest indoor men’s professional event in Canada.
