One dead after vehicle hits train near Edmonton

STURGEON COUNTY (660 NEWS) — One man is dead after his vehicle collided with a train near Edmonton on Friday.

Around 12:15 a.m., RCMP were made aware of a vehicle that was travelling northbound on Range Road 223, northeast of Edmonton, and hit a train that was passing through an intersection in the area.

Police say the man failed to stop his SUV in time and the driver’s side of the car hit the train. The vehicle then caught fire.

A 35-year-old man in the passenger seat was able to get himself out of the SUV and away from the vehicle to safety.

RCMP are continuing to investigate what caused the man to drive into the train.

No charges are expected.
