Police investigate bus stop assault. Police say the incident may be hate motivated. And as Tara Overholt tells us, this case has Calgary Police re-opening old cases from the summer.

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – One man has been charged after unexpectedly attacking another man at a bus stop on New Year’s Day.

On Wednesday morning a man was waiting at a bus stop on 5 Ave., east of 2 St. S.W., when he was attacked.

The man in his 40s was taken to hospital in stable condition after a nearby Calgary Transit driver phoned 911.

Police found the suspect two blocks from where the attack happened and arrested him.

While both men weren’t known to each other, police believe the assault may have been hate-motivated and the victim was targetted for his race.

Police say the attack could be linked to similar ones that have happened in the city.

William Thomas Potter, 28, has been charged with aggravated assault and will appear in court on Friday.
