Jaipur Bridge closing after inspection showed deterioration

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The main connection line between Eau Claire and Prince’s Island Park has been closed indefinitely.

The Jaipur Bridge which has been standing for over 50 years was shut down after the structure began deteriorating from water and salt.

In its 52nd year, the bridge initially was built with a “50-year design life” and the City had made plans to tear the bridge down in August of 2020 and build a new bridge in 2021

Due to safety concerns, the decision was made to accelerate the destruction.

In the meantime, there will still be four bridges open to access Prince’s Island Park. Detours are also being put in place, and maps will be on-site with alternate access routes.

As for the new Jaipur bridge, construction is expected to begin sometime in 2020.

The City will present the revised Jaipur Bridge design to the Calgary Planning Commission along with the Eau Claire Promenade and Plaza projects in 2020. For more information, visit the Jaipur Bridge project webpage.
