Audit of CBE to begin immediately: Education Minister

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The Province will start looking into the books of the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) immediately.

The audit issued by the Province is expected to be handed to Education Minister Adriana LaGrange by the end of January.

It comes after the CBE said it was facing a $32 million shortfall from the provincial budget.

The board originally announced it would have to cut over 300 temporary positions to make up the shortfall.

That decision was reversed after the Education Minister allowed the CBE to use $15 million from its maintenance fund to pay for teacher services.

An audit of the CBE was done by the previous NDP government, which only uncovered some bookkeeping errors, rather than overspending issues.

In a statement to 660 NEWS, the CBE said it will cooperate fully with the review and they are confident in their financial and governance practices.

The audit is expected to cost between $100,000 and $125,000.
