ASIRT: Man shot by police in Cochrane believe to have fired at officers

COCHRANE (660 NEWS) – The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says it thinks a man shot and killed by RCMP over the weekend, fired at a police armoured vehicle.

On Friday, Cochrane RCMP and the Calgary Police Service got calls about the concerning behaviour and recent messages sent by the 28-year-old man.

Police were also advised that the man–who was bound by a condition prohibiting him possessing firearms–had several guns on him.

Shortly after 7 p.m., the officers arrived at the home in northwest Cochrane and the armed suspect refused to surrender.

The home was contained and the RCMP Emergency Response Team responded to the location.

At one point, an RCMP armoured vehicle pulled up to the rear of the home, at which point police say five to six shots were fired from inside the garage, through the garage door toward the armoured vehicle.

Hours later the man came out of the house and an officer shot. EMS treated the man but he didn’t survive.

A loaded .22 calibre semi-automatic rifle was recovered from the snow near where the man fell.

Initial examination revealed what appeared to be bullet holes in the overhead vehicle door of the attached garage, and seven spent shell casings were recovered from inside the attached garage. Six bullet holes were identified on the garage of a nearby home.

A search of the house led to the recovery of two other guns and additional ammunition.

ASIRT’s investigation is ongoing.
