Skipping Stone hoping donations continue through the holiday season

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The Skipping Stone Foundation is overwhelmed by the amount of people who have paid out of pocket to donate to a GoFundMe page made in their name.

On Wednesday, Mike Morrison of mikesbloggityblog.com started the GoFundMe after the organizations announced it wouldn’t be able to take on new clients due to funding cuts.

The webpage had a goal of $10,000 that was quickly surpassed within a week.

“It’s been very heartwarming, it’s been almost overwhelming the outpouring of support,” said Anna Murphy, Director of Development with the Skipping Stone Foundation.

Skipping Stone has been operating for three years and acts as a support system for the LGBTQ2S+ community.

The non-profit offers medical services to gender-affirming care to members along with mental health and counselling services.

“In the course of 2018, Skipping Stone was connected to a thousand youth total,” Murphy said.

The organization hopes residents will keep donating even with the holiday season ramping up.

“We want to ensure that Skipping Stone can continue to be sustainable and successful well into 2020 and also beyond 2020,” Murphy said.

Murphy added that 40 per cent of transgender or gender diverse youth attempt suicide, 73 per cent of them engage in self-harming behaviour, and 95 per cent don’t have anyone to talk to.
