Calgarians encouraged to celebrate Christmas and support business in Kensington

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Like other small shopping districts in Calgary, the tough economy has taken a toll in Kensington.

The community is getting ready for another week of Christmas in Kensington.

Executive director of the business revitalization zone Annie Macinnis said while they’ve lost some businesses, they have also gained new tenants in the community.

“I feel like there’s still some confidence in Kensington but that said, businesses could really use the support of Calgarians this Christmas.”

Macinnis highlights one business in particular, Livingston and Cavell extraordinary toys, as the owners are retiring and moving to Banff.

The City of Calgary is pushing its #BuyLocalYYC during the Christmas shopping season but Macinnis admits it can be tough.

“If it’s very cold then people sometimes will opt for the mall (but) its pleasant weather to come walk and shop in these small outdoor shopping districts that really need some support and some love.”

Christmas in Kensington runs every weekend until Dec. 22 and offers free family-friendly Christmas activities and food.
