Oil giant Halliburton suspending some operations in western Canada

HOUSTON (660 NEWS) – One of the biggest energy service firms in the world is suspending some operations in western Canada.

Texas-based Halliburton said in an email its ‘cementing product service line’ will be shut down at the end of the year.

The company, with more than 60,000 employees worldwide, says it made the difficult decision because they don’t foresee the ability for the product line to provide a sufficient rate of return.

Halliburton wouldn’t say how many jobs are affected. The company has about 1,500 employees in western Canada and operates its cementing service line in Calgary, Red Deer, Whitecourt and Grande Prairie.

On Tuesday, the company also announced 800 layoffs at its office in Oklahoma City, as it’s moving most of its operations from El Reno to Duncan to consolidate operations.

The oil giant isn’t the only one leaving western Canada. In October, Calgary based Encana announced it was moving its headquarters to Denver and rebranded as Ovintiv. That was followed weeks later by the demise of Houston Oil and Gas.
