SAIT receives largest donation in school history

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It is the largest donation made in the history of a Calgary post-secondary school.

Philanthropist and former investment firm manager David Bissett has donated $30 million to SAIT to go towards a new approach to digital literacy.

“Whether it is investment management, oil and gas or agriculture, the advances in technology are breathtaking,” said Bissett. “If we are not fully competitive in these skills in the global economy, we are doomed to be a nation falling behind and will not be able to afford the standard of living and social services which we have enjoyed.”

Bissett is a member of the Order of Canada and has donated millions to various causes across the country. Bissett previously donated $5 million to SAIT in 2014 to establish the Bissett Bursary Program.

President and CEO of SAIT Dr. David Ross said the gift will help the school meet the digital disruption head-on.

“We are honoured David Bissett has chosen SAIT,” said Ross. “This significant contribution will enable SAIT to support our students and our industry partners, to develop the mindset, adaptability and knowledge to use and create technology and drive us forward.”

Bissett said that, while the $30 million is intended to develop a new school, he knows it will take support from other contributors to make it a long-term success.
