Snowfall leads to hundreds of crashes on city roads

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The latest blast of snowy weather resulted in hundreds of crashes around the city.

Calgary police said between midnight Wednesday and midnight Thursday there were 236 crashes reported.

At least 13 of those crashes resulted in injuries, but none of them was serious.

Calgary and much of southern Alberta is still under a snowfall warning. The city’s roads department says you should still be careful if you’re heading out.

“Bridge decks, hills and even intersections. Ice can form there,” said Chris McGeachy with the roads department. “We just remind people to take it easy, drive slow, leave plenty of time to get where you need to go.”

McGeachy says crews are still working on Priority-1 routes including Crowchild and Glenmore Trail.

About two to four centimetres is expected to fall in Calgary Thursday but McGeachy anticipates no snow route parking ban will come in.

“We’re going to evaluate how the accumulations look on the roads today and then make a decision on that.”

The Alberta Motor Associations says roads outside Calgary are only partially covered in snow and ice.

There is good news on the horizon as temperatures are expected to warm up in the coming days. Monday’s high could reach nine degrees.
