Bill Peters issues statement apologizing for his use of the N-word

Owning up to the allegation of using racial slurs, Bill Peters apologizes in a letter sent to the Calgary Flames and made public on social media.

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Head coach of the Calgary Flames Bill Peters has released a statement on the scandal surrounding him, taking full blame for the incident.

In the note sent to Flames General Manager Brad Treliving, it asked for him to “please accept this as a sincere apology to you, and the entire Calgary Flames organization, for offensive language I used in a professional setting a decade ago.”

The statement goes on to say, “Although it was an isolated and immediately regrettable incident, I take responsibility for what I said.”

Peters explains the racist remark was used in a “moment of frustration” and doesn’t reflect his personal values. After the incident took place he said he immediately returned to the dressing room to apologize to the team.

On Monday, Akim Aliu alleged on Twitter that Peters had directed a racial slur toward him “several times” while the two were together in the AHL. Aliu played for Peters when he was the head coach of the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago’s AHL affiliate team.

This is the first time Peters has addressed the scandal since it surfaced
