Three city councillors asking for more cuts to city services

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – City Hall’s budget-cutting knife isn’t going deep enough according to three members of council.

Instead of property tax increases for homeowners, the three councillors want to see more reductions for city services.

Councillors Jeromy Farkas, Joe Magliocca, and Sean Chu believe the city can find $50 million more in efficiencies on top of the $52.2 million already needed to freeze taxes next year.

The three want to spare essential services including police, fire and transit from any pain, but instead cut 5 per cent from all other city departments.

Magliocca said they re-examined every line of the budget and found opportunities from staplers to cemeteries, but also noted it would up to bureaucrats to find the numbers to cut.

Critics of this plan, including Councillor Evan Woolley call it a financial fairy tale.

Council will begin debating the budget on Monday and is looking at a possible 3 per cent tax hike for homeowners.
