‘There will never be a generation like ours’: Degrassi Tour making Calgary stop

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Two actors who were part of a show that inspired a generation of Canadians in the 1980s and 1990s are making a stop in Calgary to spend an evening with their long-time fans.

Pat Mastroianni and Stacie Mistysyn, best known as Joey and Caitlin from the Degrassi series, are hosting a screening of the franchise’s 1992 made-for-TV film School’s Out at Globe Cinema.

“We were always nervous people won’t come out and say hello, but they always did,” Mastroianni told 660 NEWS of past Degrassi events. “We incorporated the School’s Out movie because it’s one of those classic movies if you grew up in the 1990s. We all remember that movie with a jaw-dropping ending to that finale for the show. We love to see people respond and react to it when they see it in a live setting at a screening.

“We weren’t that polished [Beverly Hills] 90210 show, to say the least. We were quite the opposite. I think that’s what a majority of Canadians could relate to: they grew up in a town or city that were mostly middle-class people or got to see themselves represented on the show because we were such a diverse, multicultural cast. People could relate to our characters and our storylines.”

The Degrassi franchise began with The Kids of Degrassi Street in the early 1980s. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Kit Hood and Linda Schuyler produced Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High, gaining a faithful following across the country and around the world. The series concluded with School’s Out.

In the 2000s, Degrassi was revived with The Next Generation and later, The New Class.

The School’s Out screening is slated for Jan. 18, 2020, with a VIP ticket option available.

Hundreds of fans are making the pilgrimage to a Toronto convention centre for Friday’s kickoff of Degrassi Palooza, a three-day nostalgia fest where the stars of the original series and the viewers who grew up alongside them will relive their glory days at the fictional school in the 1980s and ’90s.
