Airdrie discusses bylaw to curb anti-abortion flyers

AIRDRIE (660 NEWS) – Many residents in Airdrie are upset over the number of graphic anti-abortion flyers on their doorsteps.

Airdrie city council is now struggling with the best way to prevent flyers like these from hitting households.

“If somebody were to distribute a pornographic–like a blatant, awful pornographic image–and put it on everybody’s doorstep, the RCMP would get involved. But this, the abortion flyers are okay?,” asked Deputy Mayor Candice Kolson.

On Monday, city staff came up with a recommended bylaw to deal with the graphic flyers.

Kolson argues the message these anti-abortion groups are trying to send can be done without the images.

“I don’t think we need to stop anti-abortion flyers. I think we need to stop graphic images for people that may be triggered by it or small children.”

The bylaw would allow Airdrie residents to put a ‘no flyers’ sign on their house, and anyone who still delivers could be fined $50 per residence.

However, Kolson says the suggested bylaw is missing the mark.

“The issue that I have is, if I put up a ‘no flyers’ sign, then that would include those flyers that I get that I really enjoy. I’m not going to put up a ‘no flyers’ sign, which leaves me open to getting a graphic image.”

City Council went through a first reading of the bylaw and will now move to public input sessions on the matter.
