300 temporary teaching jobs to be cut by CBE

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – 300 temporary teachers’ contracts at the CBE will be cut in the new year.
The cuts will come on January 2nd after provincial funding was reduced by 32 million dollars.
The reductions reportedly came just after the enrolment increase of 2400 students, the equivalent of four large elementary schools.
Chief Superintendent of Schools Christopher Usih says the affected teachers will be placed on the substitute teacher roster on January 3rd and a number of them may be considered for future temporary contracts.
Ushi says they are in the midst of making several other decisions to cover the budget gap and these will be communicated to staff and parents as soon as possible.
Ushi adds, “We recognize this is a difficult time for staff. We will continue to support positive transitions and effective teaching and learning. Continuity of learning is important and we are working to minimize disruption to the greatest extent possible.”
On top of the contract cuts, class sizes and bus fees will likely be going up.
