Excessive speed a factor in two serious crashes over weekend

CALGARY – Investigators with the Calgary police have determined that excessive speed was a factor in two major crashes over the weekend.

On Sunday afternoon, around 2:15, CPS was called out to the ramp that merges traffic from 130 Avenue onto Deerfoot Trail. Police say the driver lost control due to his speed, rolling the car and hitting a light post.

The driver, who was in his 50s, died on scene. The young woman in the passenger seat was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday, officers were called to the intersection of 52 Street and Erin Woods Drive. Investigators believe the driver, a man in his 50s, was speeding through the intersection when he lost control, crossed the median, and hit a tree.

The car caught fire and firefighters had to pull the driver from the car. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police say it’s still unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors in Saturday’s crash.
