Black Friday surpasses Boxing Day as most popular Canadian shopping event

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Black Friday has surpassed Boxing Day as the most popular shopping event among Canadians.

Originally an American-only sale, Black Friday falls the day after U.S. Thanksgiving and has slowly spread north of the border, with Canadians eager to get in on the deals.

A holiday shopping survey for the Retail Council of Canada finds 43 per cent of Canadian shoppers plan to open up their wallets on Black Friday this year, compared to 34 per cent who plan to shop on Boxing Day.

The survey also found that those who shop on Black Friday plan to spend more of their holiday budget on that day than those who plan to shop after Christmas.

Brick and mortar stores are still the preferred choice for deal-hunters. Only 28 per cent of Canadian holiday budgets will be spent online.
