Calgary girls suit up for role in Broadway Across Canada’s Waitress

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Two young Calgary kids are making their theatre debut in a big way.

Violet Henderson and Rowan Oler were both awarded a role in Broadway Across Canada’s Waitress, which will begin its stint at the Jubilee Auditorium later this month.

The pair will be splitting the task of portraying Lulu, the daughter of the main character, Jenna.

“My wife saw that Broadway Canada was looking for little girls around Violet’s age to audition for the role of Lulu. And we know Violet is very fun-loving and excitable so she might enjoy doing that,” explained Violet’s dad, Daniel Henderson.

“Violet had a great time in there, made them all laugh.” And a few weeks later Brian said they got the news that Violet was one of the lucky ones chosen to be Lulu.

“I was so excited! I didn’t tell very much people because they didn’t announce it yet,” shared Violet.

She says she memorized her lines, sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in her audition and even told the casting team a couple of jokes. Daniel says he and his wife go through Violet’s lines every night and will be heading to rehearsal and costume fittings on Nov. 19.

Rowan’s mom Alison Kavanagh got the news of the audition through a family member.

“So I looked it up and Rowan sounded perfect for it so we went and gave it a shot,” she said.

“She’s always dancing and singing for the rest of us and likes to be the centre of attention. One of the things they said for the character is that she’s happy-go-lucky and that’s definitely Rowan.”

Rowan says she’s looking forward to playing Lulu.

“I can sing and I’m going to do a dance and I already know [my dance],” shared the four-year-old. “When I auditioned I said, ‘Hi, Mama!’ and then I went and they picked me up and gave me a big hug!”

Kavanagh says as soon as Rowan is given her performance dates the family will be booking a bunch of tickets to go see her on stage.

You can catch Rowan and Violet in Waitress from Nov. 19-24.
