WWII medals returned to family from local Goodwill

CALGARY (CityNews) – The granddaughter of a Canadian soldier now has his medals back after they were donated to a Goodwill.

On Friday, CityNews brought the story about the medals awarded to Sgt. R.W. Finch that were found at a Goodwill store and the call to find the relatives.

An employee sorting donations came across the medals and old family photographs in a cedar box last week.

Finch’s granddaughter Tracey Scott said she was glad to have them back.

“I was very surprised. Once I got a hold of Goodwill, I got a hold of my brothers immediately and asked them if they knew who might have had the medals or if anybody even had them. None of us even knew they were still in the family.”

Among the medals recovered is the Memorial Cross, which is given to families of fallen soldiers who died in service.

Sgt. Finch died in action in 1945.

Scott said she’s visited her grandfather’s grave at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands.

“I actually went with my grandmother to the 50th anniversary in the Netherlands and saw where he was originally buried in the small town where he was killed and also went to Groesbeek and laid flowers at his grave there.”
