Second degree murder charge laid against 18-year-old Calgary man

A professional caseworker at an assisted living residence was stabbed to death Friday morning

CALGARY (660 NEWS)– A woman found stabbed to death in the S.W. Friday morning was a professional caseworker at an assisted living residence.

Calgary police got the call around 2:45 a.m. to 27 Avenue S.W. between 17 and 18 Street.

Emergency crews tried to save 47-year-old Deborah Onwu of Calgary, but she succumbed to her injuries.

Police say at some point before the incident, it is believed that a verbal and physical confrontation happened between 18-year-old Brandon Jacob Spencer Newman and Onwu, and that’s when she was stabbed.

Newman is charged with second-degree murder and remains in custody with his next court appearance set for Nov. 1.

Occupational Health and Safety is investigating the incident along with police because the attack happened to a person in the workplace.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched in Onwu’s honour.
