CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Two men have been charged in a deadly pedestrian crash which Calgary police suspect was the result of street racing.

It was back on April 22 when a 38-year-old man was hit and killed while crossing 32 Avenue N.E. at 26 Street.

An Acura car and a Toyota Tacoma truck were driving east on the road at a high rate of speed when the Acura blew through a red light and struck the man.

The truck did stop for the light, but both vehicles fled the scene after the accident.

One suspect was quickly arrested the same night by Chestermere RCMP but was only charged on Thursday after a six-month investigation.

Police also took a second man into custody and laid charges.

Nineteen-year-old Ali Jeha, of Calgary, is charged with dangerous driving and failing to remain stopped at a red light, while 20-year-old Ihab Elamm, of Chestermere, is charged with dangerous driving causing death and leaving the scene of a collision.

Police add street racing continues to be a problem in Calgary and it puts people’s lives at risk.

Anybody who witnesses street racing activities, can contact the non-emergency police line at 403-266-1234, or 911 if there is dangerous driving in progress.
