Farmers struggling mentally during tough harvest urged to seek out help

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Snow and rain during this year’s harvest have made for some very trying times for farmers in Alberta and across the prairies.

The Do More Ag Foundation is urging farmers who may be struggling with stress, anxiety, or depression to seek out help.

Executive Director Adelle Stewart notes the long drawn out harvest is just the latest in a series of setbacks that farmers had to deal with this year.

She says drought conditions, too much rain, frigid temperatures during calving season in February have taken a toll on the well-being of producers.

“This whole year has been one of the worst in a long time for all types of producers and ranchers,” Stewart said.

She believes many in the industry are reluctant to reach out for help if they’re feeling overwhelmed and depressed.

“The first step is talking, and decreasing the stigma and then we’re already starting to do something about it, so then we are on the upswing, but we definitely have work to do.

She says they have resources, including phone numbers, where producers can get help on their website.

October 6 – 12 is Mental Illness Awareness Week.
