CHESTERMERE (660 NEWS) – A teenage driver is dead after a single-car crash in Chestermere Wednesday night.

It happened at 11 p.m. on Merganser Drive near the intersection of McIvor Terrace.

Investigators say the 15-year-old was treated by emergency crews but died on the scene. The teen was behind the wheel of a sedan that hit a tree, a fence and then came to a rest.

Two bouquets have been laid near the crash site.

Rory Hunter stopped by to pay her respects and recalls what her classmate was like.

“He was just a kind person, someone who was always there for you, always had your back, accepted you for who you were,” she explained.

Hunter says she found out about the crash on the news but says she learned more when she got to school.

“It was hard to find out when it was him because you never expect somebody who you knew personally to just pass away so unexpectedly and so young,” she said.

The investigation is ongoing, but speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

In a release, Chestermere RCMP said this is a tragic loss for both the family and our community as a whole. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.
