City releases snow clearing plan as flurries could be coming

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The City of Calgary said it’s ready for snow as the forecast calls for a little bit of winter this weekend.

“In anticipation of snowfall over the next few days, we have been getting our vehicles and crews ready,” said Roads Maintenance district manager Jim Fraser. “This first storm of the season will likely result in accumulation of snow on the streets, but the warm road temperatures and mild weather should make this a relatively easy clean-up for us.”

The city unveiled its snow and ice clearing plan Thursday morning.

Under this plan, crews will sand, salt and plow roads based on a council-approved priority system meaning the more traffic there is on a roadway, the higher the priority.

“This priority system keeps the greatest number of commuters, moving quickly and safely,” said Fraser.

He goes to say that the first snowfall of the season does catch many Calgarians by surprise and reminds drivers to prepare for potentially slower conditions.

Information about snow clearing can be found on the city’s website, on Twitter @yyctransport or through 311.

The city is also launching a new snow route notification service through the myID system which allows Calgarians to receive text messages or email notifications.
