Fears of possible roof collapse close Chestermere rec centre

CHESTERMERE (660 NEWS) – The Chestermere Recreation Centre will be shut down starting Friday due to safety concerns.

Rocky View County said a structural analysis determined the roof may collapse under the weight of a heavy snow load and with snowfall expected this weekend the County chose to close the centre.

The part of the roof in question is over the ‘red rink,’ but inspectors said in their report that they’re not sure how it would impact the safety of the rest of the building.

In a statement, the County said they are working with community partners to determine the future of the building, adding it’s closed until further notice.

Chestermere has been looking at the possibility of a new facility for several years.
