Vancouver woman found safe after missing on North Shore for over 17 hours

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — North Shore Rescue has found a missing hiker safe, cold and hungry, after missing in the backcountry for over 17 hours.

The hiker found is a 36-year-old Vancouver woman who got lost on her hike Friday afternoon near Hanes Valley.

The woman’s boyfriend called the local RCMP when she did not return home Friday night.

The call sparked the extensive search from the North Shore Rescue, two other search and rescue teams and the Mounties.

A helicopter spotted her around 8:00 a.m. near Crown Mountain, ending a search that went through the night.

North Shore Rescue’s John Blown says the women did all the right things. She told someone where she was going and had some food.

“She did have a space blanket and a jacket,” Blown said.

“She just got off trail.”

The space jacket helped the crews in the sky spot her.

Three ground crews deployed at 10:30 p.m. by the trails trying to locate her. Two were sent to the Crown Mountain peak and another was searching the lower area near Crown Creek.
