Suspect sought after sexual assault on a child

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Calgary police are asking for help identifying a suspect after a young girl was sexually assaulted on Wednesday morning.

At around 8:50 a.m., an 11-year-old girl was walking to school with her mother in the southwest community of Cederbrae.

While near the intersection of Cedarwood Rise and Oakfield Drive, a man approached the girl from behind, touched her sexually and then ran away.

Officers quickly arrived and looked in the area, but were not able to locate the man.

He is described as being in his late teens or early 20s, approximately 5’4″ tall, with a slim build and brown complexion.

The suspect was wearing a black hoodie, black sweatpants, and grey shoes, and may have fled the area in a silver SUV.

Police do not believe this assault is connected to a series of recent indecent acts in the city’s southeast.

If you have any information on the case, contact the police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers.

CPS is also taking the opportunity to remind parents of some tips when their child is out in public:

– Watch for people hanging around places frequented by children but are no with any particular child.

– Accompany young children to school or other places so they are not alone.

– Supervise young children when they are outside playing in order to spot anyone interacting with them inappropriately.

– Teach older children to have a buddy with them when they go somewhere.

– Talk to children about going to safe strangers if an adult makes them uncomfortable, such as a teacher, bus driver, police officer, or a group of people in a public place such as a restaurant.

– Teach your child to trust their instincts and to run away if they feel unsafe.

– Tell your child they should resist, yell, or make noise if a person they meet makes them feel uncomfortable or someone touches them inappropriately.
