Loaded firearms seized by police from stolen vehicle

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A man and woman face 39 charges after police seized loaded firearms from a stolen vehicle.

On Sept. 10, the police Auto Theft Team (ATT) found a Ford Flex in southeast Calgary, believed to be stolen. The man and woman in the vehicle drove to a house on 7 Avenue S.E. near 44th Street.

Police arrested both without incident and a second man from the house was taken into custody but released without charges.

Officers searched the stolen vehicle and found numerous firearms including a loaded Stoeger Luger .22-caliber handgun, a Mossberg 535 12-gauge shotgun, a taser and more than 200 rounds of ammunition.

Police also found small amounts of meth, oxycodone, and personal ID that didn’t belong to the suspects.

“Stolen vehicles continue to pose a threat to public safety in our city,” said Staff Sergeant Graeme Smiley of the CPS Auto Theft Team. “Not only are we seeing these vehicles being driven in an extremely dangerous manner, but our officers are quite often seizing loaded weapons from stolen vehicles.”

Darby Benedict, 24, and Tyler Reid, 29, of Calgary, have been charged with 24 offences related to weapons, drugs and stolen property. They also face over 10 charges of breach of condition.
