Man dies from catastrophic injuries after being struck by CTrain

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — After hours of delays, CTrain service along 7 Avenue has been restored.

A 32-year-old man died from severe injuries that he sustained from being struck by a CTrain on Monday afternoon, according to Calgary police.

Emergency crews took the man to the hospital in life-threatening condition and he was rushed into surgery.

A peace officer who spoke to 660 NEWS says that a westbound train struck the person but the driver did not notice and continued on to Sunnyside station.

Cindy White was on the train when it happened.

“There is evidence of where the person was hit. It looks like he was hit right by the front door of the train, a number of people saw it, heard it. It looked like a guy fell over and then fell back,” she said.

“People were pretty shocked on the train with us and the guy who was standing right next to us saw something.”

Nicholas Head was getting off the train when he witnessed the man getting hit.

“Got off the train, probably took fifteen steps towards my appointment and then people started lunging and shouting.

I glanced over to see a guy go down between two cars and after that, I kept moving straight — don’t know exactly what the cause was,” he said.

“I didn’t want to look — I heard metal screeching and what sounded like rubber squealing.”

That’s when he said the train kept moving.

It caused major delays for commuters and it was several hours before CTrain service was restored.

Police do not believe speed was a factor and are still looking into whether drugs and alcohol played a role.
