Federal party leaders waste no time hitting the campaign trail following first leaders’ debate

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) – Federal party leaders are wasting no time hitting the campaign trail following Thursday night’s Citytv-Maclean’s debate.

Day three of the election campaign kicked off with a promise about your cell phone bill.

Surrounded by supporters holding placards with emoji symbols and price tags in Toronto, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh promised to make your life more affordable by placing a cap on the amount of money you will pay for cellphone and internet services.

“On top of that, we’ve got a host of other measures. We want to put in place true, unlimited data plans, we want to make sure that there isn’t throttling, that we see with the current, kind of fake, unlimited data plans.”

Singh denies this may dry up investment from the big telecom companies and doesn’t believe it will hurt competition in the market. He claims Canadians pay some of the highest rates in the world, however, government studies have shown cell services have dropped by more than $300 annually over the last three years.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is also campaigning in the Toronto area. He’s promised to bring back the public transit tax credit, which the party says is part of its environment plan.

The Liberal government cut the tax credit in the 2017 budget, saying it was ineffective and they would rather spend the money on building transit.

Meantime, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau — who didn’t join the other three party leaders at Friday’s first leaders’ debate — is spending Friday in Quebec, where he plans to wrap up the day with a rally in his hometown of Montreal. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May is in southern British Columbia, with a planned event in Mission.
