Meat producers want answers from Ottawa on China ban

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Canada’s beef and pork producers are calling on the federal government to make clear its strategy when it comes to China.
It’s been almost three months since China implemented a temporary suspension of red meat from Canada after discovering what it alleges were forged Canadian health certificates on a non-Canadian pork shipment.

Producers believe there’s more at play considering Canada’s strained relationship with China over the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou.
Regardless, they say the suspension has cost the industry almost $100-million dollars and the longer it remains in place, the greater the risk to Canadian jobs and to Canada’s market share.
Ahead of the election, producers are calling on all parties to explain how they would resolve the situation and get Canadian beef and pork back into China.
