‘One beast of a storm’ : Dorian knocks out power to record number of Nova Scotians

HALIFAX – ‘It impacted more customers than any storm in Nova Scotia Power’s history,’ says the Nova Scotia Power spokesperson Andrea Anderson.

Now that the winds have died down, crews are out in full force assessing damage and restoring electricity.

Utility spokesperson Andrea Anderson described Dorian as “one beast of a storm” and says it set a record.

“It impacted more customers than any storm in Nova Scotia Power’s history,” she tells NEWS 95.7’s The Todd Veinotte Show. “At the peak of the storm, there were over 400,000 of our customers without power.”

As of 9:15 a.m. Sunday 378,735 customers are still in the dark.

Nova Scotia Power is in the process of bringing in an additional 400 crews to add to the around 1,000 personnel they already have in place. Some are coming from as far away as Maine and Florida.

“There’s a lot of flooding, there’s uprooted trees, there’s broken poles and downed power lines across the province,” says Anderson. “We’re working really hard to assess the damage, to start fixing and hoping to restore our customers as soon as it’s possible.”

Four helicopters have been deployed to help give them a better idea of just how bad it is.

Anderson says that will help them establish more accurate estimated restoration times.

“We know it’s frustrating for people to be without power, and we’re doing our very best to get it back up again,” she says.
